When I lived in the North Cotswolds and West Oxfordshire, I would regularly see foxes and their young scavenging for food (which I admit, I did leave out for them!).  This particular painting was inspired by seeing a vixen with her young crossing a country road near Paxford in the Cotswolds.  I was struck by her protectiveness and wanted to express that.  The beauty of the colour of their coats especially in autumn when they blend in was also an inspiration.
