Mosaic Workshops &Tuition

I run mosaic workshops at Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws, near Newtown, Powys, Mid Wales.

The class size is small – 8 people maximum and I provide all the supplies including glass, ceramics, china, pottery, beads and the bases on which you will work.

This varies depending upon the theme of the workshop. Currently I offer the opportunity to learn how to mosaic onto a flat or a curved surface:

Mosaicing onto a flat surface – You may choose a 4” or 8” square MDF board or a shape in thin MDF board which is suitable for hanging with a cord or ribbon. These include birds, doves, hares, Christmas Trees or there are beautiful Welsh slate options - hearts of different sizes and stars.

Mosaicing onto a curved surface – A small terracotta flower pot is offered for you to work with (4” high x 4” diameter) but you are welcome to bring your own flower pot or bowl. If you want to complete a mosaic in the day then it will need to be a fairly small pot or, if it’s larger, you may decide to create a number of motifs around it. I can discuss this with you on the day.

The themes of each workshop will usually reflect the colours and seasonal changes in nature (birds, flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, frogs) in spring, summer, autumn and at Christmas.

There is always the option for you to bring a larger piece from home. Maybe a treasured pot, bowl or plate that you would like to add mosaic pieces to, maybe to cover cracks or chips or to simply embellish something and bring colour and a design into the surface by creating one or two motifs on the surface. Hunting in the charity shops is also a fun thing to do if you are looking for a base upon which to put a mosaic design.

If you think you would like to work on quite a large surface which you bring with you, you can start it in the workshop and then complete it at home and invest in the tools if you think you will do more mosaics (a starter pack of mosaic tools with the essentials is about £25-£30 online). If you want to bring your own piece and you’re not sure if it’s achievable in a day, please make contact with me.

It may help to have a look at my Small Mosaic Gifts or the smaller mosaic tiles in the Tiles & Wall Decorations gallery to give you an idea of what’s possible within a day.

Mosaicing Christmas decorations or other small pieces for gifts – At Christmas I offer Christmas trees and doves as well as other shapes which I offer all year round, including:

Large/Medium/Small slate hanging hearts; small slate heart shaped coasters; hanging birds and hanging hares. Other shapes may be possible if you let me know with plenty of notice, if there’s something that you’re particularly interested in. Please have a look at my small mosaic gifts in the shop to give you a sense of what is achievable.

Usually, it’s possible to create two of these small pieces in a day’s workshop.

Finishing your mosaic piece(s):

To grout a piece, it needs to set for a while so that the pieces are fully secure. This means that often it isn’t possible to grout your piece or paint it, if that is part of the design, within the day.

Look at Pippa’s pot here on the right. She created the mosaics within the workshop and grouted and painted the surround at home. Also, Mary’s small piece (above right) was taken home to grout.

Within the workshop, I offer a demonstration of how to grout and I give you a detailed handout of the steps to follow. I also recommend a Youtube video that can take you through it. It’s very straightforward!

Price, Dates and booking:

Contact me or Mid Wales Arts Centre direct on email: office@midwalesarts.org.uk, tel: 07970 671819 for the latest dates. Each workshop costs £80. Please book and pay directly with Mid Wales Arts Centre either by phone or email (click on link below).

Exhibitions, food and accommodation:

They have a wonderful café that’s open for the duration of the workshop, serving teas/coffees/delicious home-made cakes and light lunches. The food is first rate – I can vouch for that personally!

As an arts centre, they also have a shop selling ceramics, mosaics, prints, orginals, cards, books and jewellery. And there are always one or two exhibitions showing that you might like to visit in the break. B&B accommodation is also available.

Private Tuition

I also offer private one-to-one or one-on-two private tuition at my studio near Builth Wells, Mid Wales. My charges are: Half day (10am- 1pm or 1pm-5pm) - £55 per head; A full day (10am – 4.30pm with a break for lunch) - £100. If you’ve never mosaiced before, a day is appropriate to learn the basics and create a small piece (either flat or curved). If you have some experience of mosaicing but want to develop your skills, then half a day may be enough for you.

I offer tea/coffee/biscuits. If you’re having lunch here, please bring what you need. Builth Wells is about a 3 minute drive away for food. If you have a query either about the MWAC workshops or about private tuition, please call me on 07899 891992 or click here to contact me.
