COMMUNITY MOSAIC COMPLETED!

I am delighted to announce that the community mosaic that I have been supervising at Mid Wales Arts Centre since Easter is finished and  is now available for all to see on the platform at Caersws railway station in Powys.

COUNTY TIMES POWYS PRESS RELEASE 24 OCTOBER 2025

Three new figures and a beautiful mural are the latest additions to have been unveiled at Caersws Railway Station to welcome train passengers to the village.

The large mosaic of ceramic tiles, motifs, recycled pottery, beads and found objects, tells the story of Caersws including the football club, railway line, arts centre and the rolling hills surrounding the Severn Valley.

Mid Wales Arts’ artist in residence Delia Taylor Brook, a specialist in multimedia mosaic, had the honour of unveiling the mural in front of residents and volunteers on Thursday afternoon (October 23).

Guarding the platform are three ceramic sculptures made by teenagers which depict John Ceiriog Hughes, a celebrated poet and former station master at Caersws station; a Roman figure and a celt. The station was built on the site of one of two Roman forts built in Caersws.

“Despite the very terrible weather today with Storm Benjamin there was still a very good turnout at the station,” said Mid Wales Arts curator Cathy Knapp.

"We were absolutely delighted to be able to unveil the mural that's been made at Mid Wales Arts.

"It's been a real community project that's involved hundreds and hundreds of hours from families and people of all abilities.

The mural celebrates Caersws. It's really a beautiful mural guided by the expertise of Delia and the knowledge of the ceramic artists who have been able to draw together the talents of people in the area who have highlighted the reason they love living in Caersws.

In addition, as well we were delighted that we could unveil three statues; one of a Roman solider, one of a Celt and one of John Ceiriog Hughes that were made by teenagers at the centre over the past few years; always intended for the railway station and it's lovely now to have them in their final resting place.

“I hope they will be enjoyed by the community, and it's given Caersws station a specific individuality that would be hard to compete with.”
